We spent Memorial Day Weekend on a bike trip! It was our first two night trip (two nights with just bikes and gear, and no car camping). Saturday the weather forecast kept forecasting rain later and later in the day, and we finally gave up and just went (and didn't get a drop of rain on us). We left at 3 PM and stopped at the Brat Festival for brats and ice cream. Then we continued on to Lake Kegonsa State Park. On the way we biked 1.9 miles on the bike path and paid $40 for season bike path passes and Thomas tried to get rid of loose change to pay. Unfortunately the slit to drop the money envelope in wasn't large enough for our thick envelope with pocket change, so it broke in half (half in the box), but at least all but 10 cents ended up on the outside half and we started over.  We arrived at the park around 6:45. A ranger there a few years ago told us if we arrived by bike that they would always have a spot for us, even if they were full. They were full, and the first two rangers were going to give us a spot. Then this mean ranger came and told us that they had no obligation to give us a spot, and we should have made reservations, and they only have to give us a spot if it's dark out and too late for us to continue on (although really we weren't realistically going to be able to get anywhere else that late in the evening). and he said he can't have people like us trying to avoid the reservation fee because that's not fair (how many other people are there like us coming on bikes anyway?). So we ended up with a luxury site with 3 picnic tables and benches all around the campfire with comfortable seating for 30. And we were far away from the other campers so no drinking partiers kept us up at night. We had a snack of brie cheese and crackers for dinner, and went on a hike where there were a ton of purple flowers and a cool pine plantation. Thomas worked on making a fire all night with wet wood.
The next morning we went on a hike. Thomas found a pupa but it was way too high up in the tree for him to catch it. We set off on our trip at 12:15. We stopped soon for tuna, dressing, and crackers. We stopped later at Cam Rock County park for pudding. Then we biked near Lake Ripley where there were a lot of vacation homes and people playing in the water.
We arrived at Sandhill Station State Campround in Lake Mills sometime (maybe 5) and luckily there were 3 sites to choose from (the ranger said all of the sites had been reserved for the weekend but some people had left or not shown up). It was the most crowded we had ever seen it. Usually there are only a few other campers there, but memorial day weekend is different. There were plenty of drinking partiers there. We had spaghetti and vodka sauce for dinner and kahlua. Thomas made a very nice warm fire (the people who left early left us firewood).
The next day we biked home super fast. Lo invited us to her memorial day party so Megan wanted to get there in time. We left around 10AM and arrived home at 2 PM and also we had some instant hummus for breakfast. The powder thickened the water quickly so it's a good camping option.
Another funny thing was that Thomas thought the instant pistachio pudding mix was gatorader mix! Luckily I was able to catch him before he added it to his water bottle!
Thomas found red cardinal feathers on his way home.
We biked 88.3 miles, 9.3 mph average, and were on our bikes for 9 Hours and 27 Minutes. We're finally in shape, but because of marriage and Thomas's birthday and visitors and all we will have a 5 week break now.
